The Artist

melissa brauen art

Melissa Brauen is a mixed media studio painter using primarily acrylics and collage elements in a contemporary expressionist style. Much of her current work is created through intuitive processes and exploration. Her subjects include landscape and abstracted figuration.
She started her professional journey many years ago using pastels to create commissioned portraits. After following other pursuits in retail management, medical x-ray, and several entrepreneurial endeavors, she returned to her creative roots with dedication to honing her artistic skills.
She studied the arts throughout her life in traditional as well as non-traditional venues such as high-school and college art courses, artist workshops, and on-line tutorials. She continues her eduction with virtual training, live workshop study, and a steady studio practice.

My Process

  • I work primarily in acrylic mediums, using collage, pastel, ink and other art mediums.
  • All layers are fully dried and cured.
  • When a piece is done, I use an isolation coat made of thinned gloss acrylic medium before varnishing.  This coat gives a unified finish and nice luster. It also plays well with the varnish.
  • I use a non-yellowing, archival, UV resistant, polymer, water based varnish.  It is also non-removable.
  • All canvas is pre-primed with gesso.
  • All panels are primed with gesso or water based Kilz brand primer and then gessoed.
  • Canvas and cradled panels are wired and ready to hang. Flat panels are framable.
  • I use professional materials and mediums to ensure archival quality.
